Well-established Austrian artist Helmut Zwerger, whose portraits have been shuttled into space, has painted portraits of various Bollywood celebrities, including Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, and Aishwarya Rai.
Zwerger, 66, who had exhibited his works in Italy, Germany, USA, France, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Liechtenstein, and China, is currently displaying some of his paintings at Hirji Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai (India) till February 15.
He has also painted portraits of other Bollywood stars like Madhubala, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Kajol; Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and Indian business magnate Vijay Mallya. He finds Indian culture and Bollywood extremely fascinating and his works are said to capture the soul and not the face. He has visited India thrice and reportedly commented: “India has everything”.
Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, commended efforts of artists like Zwerger which resulted in bringing West and East closer through popular culture. Zed, who is chairperson of Indo-American Leadership Confederation, urged artists, filmmakers, writers, etc., of West and East to explore each others’ subjects, thus bridging the gap further.
Self-taught Zwerger has also painted portraits of Hollywood celebrities Golden Globe winner Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Terminator) and Oscar nominated Danny de Vito (Get Shorty), Soviet cosmonaut Juri Gagarin, United States astronaut John Glenn, and Italian operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti. He lives in Innsbruck in Austria and his medium of work is acrylic.
